Ontario Fertility Program Overview
The Ontario Fertility Program provides funding to help eligible patients build their families. Access to funded fertility services is available for all forms of infertility, including medical and non-medical infertility, regardless of gender, sexual orientation, or family status.
What’s New in Ontario’s Fertility Funding Program?
The Ontario government is investing $150 million over two years to expand the Ontario Fertility Program, aiming to reduce waitlists and triple the number of families accessing government-funded fertility services.
Fertility Tax Credit in Ontario:
Starting January 2025, claim up to 25% of eligible expenses (such as IVF cycles, fertility medications, and travel for treatment), capped at $5,000 annually.
Triple the Access to IVF Funding in Ontario:
The program now supports three times more families with publicly funded in vitro fertilization (IVF) services.
Inclusive Support:
Coverage applies to all forms of infertility—medical and non-medical—irrespective of gender, sexual orientation, or family status.
What Treatments Are Covered in the Program of Fertility Funding Ontario?

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) Funding
One funded cycle per lifetime. This includes monitoring, fertilization, embryo freezing, and single embryo transfers.
Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) Funding
Unlimited funded procedures, including cycle monitoring and insemination for eligible patients.
Fertility Preservation (FP) Funding
Coverage for egg or sperm freezing for medical reasons, including one attempt at retrieval and freezing.
Are You Eligible for Fertility Fundings in Ontario?
Residency: Be an Ontario resident with a valid OHIP card.
Age: For the Ontario IVF funding, patients must be under 43 at the time of treatment.
Previous Funding: Patients should not have previously accessed a funded IVF cycle (exceptions apply for surrogates).
Costs Not Covered by Ontario Fertility Funding
While the program alleviates many costs, certain expenses are not covered:
Medications: Costs of medication can be high in IVF or IUI cycles, but they are not covered. Call us to find a solution for you!
Genetic Testing: Not included in the funding.
Storage Fees: Costs associated with storing sperm, eggs, and embryos.
Donor Materials: Expenses for donor eggs or sperm are not covered.

Starting January 2025, Ontario provides a fertility tax credit covering 25% of eligible expenses, up to $5,000 per year. The credit applies to IVF treatments, fertility medications, and related medical costs.
Egg freezing is not fully covered by OHIP. OHIP funds initial consultations with a general practitioner referral and most diagnostic tests, but patients must pay out-of-pocket for the actual egg freezing procedure.
OHIP covers key fertility tests in Ontario, including hormone blood tests (excluding AMH), transvaginal ultrasounds, semen analysis, Day 3 hormone testing, cycle monitoring, and specialist consultations with a GP referral. Preconception testing is also included under OHIP coverage.
